Description
The Institute of Psychosexual Medicine provides education, training and research in psychosexual medicine for doctors in the UK.
Activities
Doctors who pass the Membership Examination may practice as a specialist in psychosexual medicine and be added to the IPM referrals list.
What sort of problems can a psychosexual doctor help with?
In men:
o Difficulty getting or maintaining an erection.
o loss of interest in sex.
o Problems with ejaculation - where it happens too quickly, slowly or not at all.
In women:
o Loss of interest in sex.
o Difficulty becoming aroused or achieving orgasm.
o Painful sex.
o Inability to have penetrative sex.
There are some sexual problems that are not generally treated by IPM doctors:
o Where the sexual problem is part of a larger overall problem - eg psychiatric illness.
o Illegal sexual behaviours such as paedophilia.
o Gender dysphoria - where someone believes they have been born the wrong sex.
Materials
The IPM has a list of accredited doctors who take NHS and private referrals.
